The research explores urban sustainable development of self-help settlement in Lagos, with a particular focus on the optimisation of participation and negotiation processes in the improvement of the heath and well-being of the inhabitants of Makoko, a swampy self-help settlement. In the last three decades Nigeria’s most urbanised city, Lagos, has experienced rapid urban sprawl, including slum upgrade programmes that promoted demolition and displacement of slum inhabitant from their homes.
These kind of processes are now under scrutiny as research shows that health and well-being impact is associated with the built and unbuilt environment. The research combines fieldwork and paddle-along studies, interviews and focus group sessions to assess the state of health and well-being in Makoko, with a view of developing strategies to improve living conditions in the neighbourhood.
